There is a soft rustling in the garden. Something is creeping through the bushes. Has Toby, the children’s dog from next door got lost again? So late in the twilight? Or was it an illusion? Now it is snuffling and smacking its lips clearly. Then it rustles again. A cough is heard.Twigs snapping. Burglars?
No, it isn’t burglars. It is Russell the town hedgehog. The publicist, author and wildlife film director, Eckhard Bahr accompanies him on his often secret travels throughout a whole year.
Russell has difficulty in surviving his first winter. He only just escapes the eagle owl. Bravely he wins his fight against an adder and rides out other dangers. He watches the hares’ wedding and goes in search of his own wife. Then he is at loggerheads with this brother. Or should that be logger-spines? And Toby the neighbours’ dog remains his worse enemy. Russell takes it all with a sense of fun and humour. The book which is intended for readers from nine years of age, contains information and advice on how to become actively involved with wildlife and especially with hedgehog conservation.

A little boy could not come to sleep. Of course: because his little legs not liked to stop to struggle and kick. And what, if one of the little legs simply walks away? The story could happen almost in every city round the world. And it is suitable to help children of early age to grow up bilingual playfully or to bringt them easier in touch with another tongue in their family in our more and more many-coloured world.
With nice paintings of Ani Grey.
Eckhard Bahr, an independent publicist and lecturer, publishes fiction as well as art, literature, facts and environmental books in German and English. In addition to his children’s books he has written stories, lyrics, features, articles, radio publications and documentary films, including „Igelleben“ - „The Life of the Hedgehog“. He has the idea to bring over knowledge of language and culture as early as possible in lifetime - therefore he told the story Little Leg of Littleleg also to his son in the early age of two years in both tongues English and German and asks friends of him in many countries to translate it to their mother tongues. So one day it can be told in any language of the world.
Ani Grey studied Visual Communication at the academy of fine arts Hochschule der Künste, Berlin. She works as independent illustrator with emphasis on depiction of human beings and animals. Her special interest with it is directed on how to make visible mimic art and body language expressing emotions.
